Xypex Crystalline Technology

Xypex Crystalline Technology can be found deep within the concrete, at the microstructure level. It is here that the Xypex proprietary chemicals react with the natural byproducts of cement hydration to prevent ingress from water and other harsh, corrosive liquids. With water as the catalyst, Xypex forms a non-soluble crystalline structure within the interconnected pores of the concrete and becomes a permanent part of the concrete matrix, providing unmatched protection from within the concrete structure.

Developed in the lab and perfected through decades of continuous research and improvements, waterproofing by crystallization revolutionized concrete sealing, which had traditionally been a surface-level approach.

The Xypex crystalline system for concrete waterproofing is substantially different from traditional barrier products — like membranes and cementitious coatings.

  • The concrete waterproofing system creates a crystalline structure deep within the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete mass to prevent the penetration of water and aggressive chemicals. In contrast, barrier-type products function only at the surface of the concrete
  • Because it is not dependent on surface adhesion to achieve its cement waterproofing effect, it is resistant to extreme hydrostatic pressure
  • It will seal static hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm
  • It is not subject to the deterioration problems encountered by membranes
  • Xypex is permanent and reactivates and self-heals whenever water is present

Seen at the microscopic level, concrete contains a multitude of pores, capillaries and cracks, which provide a passageway for infiltration of water and other liquids. Xypex Crystalline Technology reacts with water and cement hydration products to form a non-soluble crystalline structure within these voids.

An Opportunity Discovered

The porous nature of concrete served as the starting point for scientists at Xypex Chemical Corporation as they were seeking to expand upon surface-applied coatings for concrete waterproofing. Xypex researchers went below the surface into the concrete matrix, where tunnel-like capillaries of concrete are a natural part of its mass, permitting passage of water and other liquids.

Xypex researchers recognized the opportunity for a chemical treatment that would fill these microscopic capillaries to prevent the penetration of water and other liquids. Through the principle of diffusion, the chemicals in Xypex products react with water and travel through the capillaries of the concrete. The chemical reaction between Xypex, water and the byproducts of cement hydration form a new non-soluble crystalline structure that internally seals the concrete and renders it waterproof.

Verified through extensive independent testing and backed by numerous approvals and certifications, Xypex concrete crystallization products significantly advance the waterproofing, protection, and repair of concrete in all types of applications – both on the surface and in the mix.
