Al Salha Water Treatment Plant

Omdurman, Sudan

The Salha water treatment plant, strategically positioned on the White Nile's shore in the Salha area, was developed to enhance water services for the southern region of the national capital, Omdurman. Given the critical nature of this infrastructure, ensuring the structural integrity and impermeability of the concrete water tanks was paramount. The project encountered significant challenges, notably concerning concrete defects, with prevalent issues such as faulty joints and honeycombs that compromised the structures watertightness. Furthermore, funding constraints resulted in adjustments in the project’s management and schedule.

The technical proposal advocating for the unique Xypex Crystalline Technology was chosen over alternative waterproofing methods, such as membranes and cementitious coatings, due to its proven efficacy and suitability for the project's specific requirements. Xypex Concentrate was selected for its strong reputation in the water treatment industry, its certification for potable water use, its capacity to self-heal cracks up to 0.5 mm and its increased chemical resistance including reduction in chloride ingress. Xypex Concentrate may be applied to either the positive or negative sides of concrete applications and does not require a dry surface.

This product was applied to waterproof and protect the plant's concrete water tanks, covering a surface area of 1,984 m2. Initial specifications included the use of APP bitumen sheets on the external side and 2-component cementitious coating internally. However, Xypex Concentrate was used as the sole waterproofing solution, replacing both other systems.

The successful application of Xypex Concentrate at the Salha water treatment plant not only addressed the existing concrete defects but also provided a durable, long lasting solution to water infiltration and exfiltration issues. This implementation highlighted the effectiveness of Xypex Crystalline Technology in ensuring that water treatment facilities remain watertight and functional, contributing significantly to the region's water infrastructure integrity and reliability.
